Modesto Boy is Voted Medal, $1,000 for Heroism
Elbert W. Davis of Berkeley Is Awarded Carnegie Hero Medal

Elbert W. Davis, 1539 Bonita Avenue, former University of California track star, was today awarded a Carnegie bronze medal by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission at its fall meeting held in Pittsburgh, Pa., for an act of heroism in 1917. He has been awarded the Carnegie Hero medal and $1,000 in cash for saving Victor F. Cesmat from drowning in the San Joaquin river slough on May 31, 1917. Elbert Davis is well known in Modesto. He spent several years on his father's ranch west of the city. The recipient has received the medal; the $1,000 in cash will be forwarded later. The object of the award is for educational purposes. Mr. Davis will notify the foundation committee of the use to which he will put the money.
