Thomas Bean1
5th great-grandfather of Kerry Suzanne Davis.
Ella S. (Gregg) Bean wrote to her son Milo W. Bean: "Our Beans were Irish and settled in PA. There are also English Beans, as well as the Scotch. Professor Drummond was president of the Bean society comprising the English and American branches when he died, but I think their [sic] no relation."
Alice Gibson Hornby, upon whose research much of our Bean Family data was based, wrote: "The Bean family is of Scotch-Irish descent and came from Ireland about 1760 and settled at Philadelphia, PA."
But, further in her notes, she says that: "Thos. Bean, a Scotchman, born about 1694-6, came from Ireland to America in 1730. Landing at Philadelphia. Settled in Hempfield, PA (Huntingdon County)." She goes on to say: "The 9 sons and 1 daughter of Thomas Bean moved to York County, PA after the Revolutionary War and remained there until after the Whiskey Insurrection at Pittsburg. John Bean (oldest son) moved to (or remained in) Buck's County; the other 8 brothers and 1 sister moved to Westmorland County, PA, and settled near Hannahstown, remaining until 1798 (1800) when they moved to Mercer County, PA, and settled along the Shenango River east and south of Greenville, PA.
During the War of 1812, three of the boys served under General Wm. H. Harrison in the Tippecanoe Campaign, the rest that were old enough went to Erie, PA, as Minute Men. Note: All the boys except John were taxpayers in Neshannock Township (now Kempfield township) in 1800, hence must have been all old enough to serve in 1812."3,4,5
