Daughters Ann and Martha
Byron was born and grew up in the small farming community of Osseo, Wisconsin where his father owned a local meat market. Byron had one sister named Thelma. He grew up loving music and played both the cello and sports in high school. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and received a BS in Education. He was always very proud of his Norwegian heritage, which was quite evident when looking at this tall, handsome, and always smiling man.
Byron taught for one year at Winter Wisconsin High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy on June 17, 1941. He wrote a wonderful manuscript describing his experiences called "My Memories of World War II" which was typed by his daughter Ann Johnson around 1996 or so I believe. In his Epilogue he sums up his 52 month Naval career, from September 1941 to January 1946, thusly: "4 months as an enlisted man and 48 months as an Officer. I retired from the U.S. Navy as a Lt. Commander. I spent a total of 36 months on sea duty, all in the Pacific Area. I was on two ships: the USS Idaho and the USS Tucson. While on these ships, I traveled approximately 750,000 miles, from the Bering Sea near Alaska to Australia and Japan. I participated in eight major engagements, and was in Tokyo Bay at the end of World War II. I have no regrets and am proud of my service in the U.S. Navy. However, I would not want to do it again." He WAS very proud of his service and his address labels to the day he died said "Byron T. Johnson, LCDR USNR RET."
For many years, Byron worked in a job he seemed to love for Getty Oil Company in the HRS or human relations department. As his daughter Corinne relates, "he worked with young, recently graduated Asian men employed by Getty Oil, who invited Byron and Dorothy to Japan a couple of times as a token of their gratitude."2,3
Byron and Dorothy moved circa 1950 to Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. They spent 40-some years in their snug house in a pretty area of Glendale.3
Some of Kerry's Memories of her Uncle Byron
He and Dorothy often babysat for Warren, Gail and me when we were young and our family lived up in the Oakland Hills, while Dor and Byron were still living in Oakland or Berkeley -- I remember us all sitting in a long line with Byron at the rear, each scratching the next person's back -- and he, as well as Dor, would let us "do" their hair which must have been quite painful at times considering the age and expertise of the hair stylists (all under about 10 years old). I was an avid ballet dancer at that time but too young to dance in the older kids "couples" or pas de deux classes where the girls were partnered by BOYS (!!!) -- Byron often offered to be my ballet partner and he would pick me up and carry me about held high in the air, catch me when I ran and leapt into his arms, would help keep me twirling when I did pirouettes on pointe, or do a pas de deux with me -- I was 8 or 10 and thought it was just the most thrilling thing in the world. He and Dorothy were such fun and so good to us -- my favorite aunt and uncle.
Byron and Dor loved music and I remember well Byron playing his cello accompanied by Dorothy on the piano, giving us delightful mini concerts back in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. They loved all the good guys, Bach, Beethoven and Mozart to name a few, as well as operas; I remember Puccini was a favorite. They were also big readers and, in particular, fans of mysteries.
They longed to have children of their own and I know how thrilled they were when each of their darling girls entered their lives: Ann, Martha and Cori.3
Each year, for many years, the family spent a month during the summer at the small resort community of Twain Harte situated on a mountain lake in the Sierra Nevada, in the vicinity of Yosemite. At home and when traveling, too, Byron loved fishing for albacore and trout and once he had moved to Oregon he and Uncle Bud Gale made some fishing trips together. Dor and Byron enjoyed trips to Hawaii too, and they also had a couple of wonderful trips to Japan which they made by invitation of the Japanese men Byron had mentored through his job at Getty Oil Company. Byron loved traveling and he also loved the Greenbay Packers; he was an ardent fan, watching their games and cheering them on over the years.4,3
Soon after the death of Ann in 1998, which came soon after the death of Dorothy in 1997, Byron moved in about 1999 to Beaverton, Clackamas County, Oregon, to be closer to Cori and her family. He quickly built a large, multi-storied house where he lived with Cori's family -- he had included one floor for himself, his own private domain, so they could maintain some privacy when they wanted. They all lived together until Byron's health began to fail in about 2005 or so, and he had to move into assisted living.3
After his death in 2008, Byron's ashes were interred on 5 August 2008 at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Boulevard, Portland, Clackamas or Multnomah County, Oregon. His memorial with Military Honors was held at 10:00 am. His wife Dorothy's ashes were interred at this time with Byron's and their headstone reads, "In Loving Memory" with their names and dates.5

Her Third or Fourth Birthday
Her Third or Fourth Birthday
Martha was quite darling, ethereal and bright, as well as very, very sweet -- I always thought of her as an extraordinarily different little fairy child, very special and not quite of this world.1
