Romanus de Helton - 1146-1174
Hylton Castle Today
View from the front
Romanus de Helton was born before 1146 in Durham County, England. He died after 1174 in Durham County, England.

Romanus is the first Hylton for whom there is documentary evidence, but Bishop Hugh of Durham notes that he held ancient fiefs which suggest that the Hyltons were established before the Norman Conquest.

In 1157, Romanus "made a convention with the Prior and Chapter of St. Cuthbert, relative to his Chapel of Hilton." In 1166, "in the return of Hugh Pudsey, Bishop of Durham," he held 3 Knights' fees and "he was probably by no means the first settler, as his lands were held by antient feoffment or de vereri feoffamento. (Note: In English law, "Feoffment" is the granting of a free inheritance of land [fee simple] to a man and his heirs. The delivery of possession [livery of seisin] was done on the site of the land and was made by the feoffor to the feoffee in the presence of witnesses. Written conveyances were often customary and, after 1677, mandatory.)

He was a witness in the charter of Bishop Hugh to Anchetel Bolmer which took place in 1171/1174.

While Hylton Castle was built or perhaps rebuilt around 1400, and today is a deserted ruin, it is thought that Hiltons were probably inhabiting this land or certainly land in the area and on the River Wear for a couple of hundred years before that. It is mentioned by Surtees that William the Conqueror had gifted to a Henry Hilton "broad lands along the Wear." It appears that in 1640, a later Henry Hilton (born in 1586), brought about the near ruin of the family and loss of the family estate and lands through the terms of his will in which he devised "the whole of his paternal estate for ninety-nine years to the Lord Mayor and four senior Aldermen of the City of London. . . ."1,2
