Descent from Thomas Ballard, Sr.
Margaret Ballard was born in 1836 in Illinois.2 She was the daughter of Hezekiah Rhodes Ballard and Nancy Crawford.1 Margaret Ballard married William W. O'Bryan on 20 October 1853 in Menard County, Illinois. Margaret Ballard died on 10 August 1915 in Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California.

Margaret Ballard and William W. O'Bryan appeared on the census of 1880 at Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois. Most of the O'Bryan family is shown on this census with Margaret listed as keeping house and William as a brick mason. The seven children listed are Harry (20) and Albert (17), both boys working with their father as brick masons. The rest of the children are shown as "at home": William (15), Greene (12), Mamie or Mary (10), Robert (8) and Bertha (5). John Frank (Francis) at age 24 was of course not shown as he was already married and had just had a child of his own.3

John Ballard says he suspects that Margaret was a widow by 1889 since she shows up on a list of delinquent land tax payers in Menard County for that year.2

And in 1910 Margaret shows up on the census as living in Santa Clara with her daughter Mary and her family. The census further shows that only 3 of Margaret's 8 children were still living in 1910: Harry, Mary and Robert (all 8 were alive in 1880).2

Obviously, James and his family must have moved to Nebraska at some point. Also, according to the censuses, James was a brickmason like his father and brother Harry.1
