John Davis, Navigator, 1543 - 1605
Captain John Davis was born in October 1543 in Sandridge, Stoke Gabriel, County Devon, England. While his birthdate is usually shown as circa 1550, the Hakluyt & Gilbert source shows that the village parish register for October 1543 of the Church of St. Mary and St. Gabriel notes that "Wm. Davis had a child christened named John.1,3" He was the son of William Davis.2 Captain John Davis married Faith Fulford, daughter of Sir John Fulford and Lady Dorothy Bourchier, on 29 September 1582 in Stoke Gilbert, County Devon, England.4 Captain John Davis died on 27 December 1605 in The Straits of Malacca, Sumatra, at age 62 at the hands of Japanese pirates.1

John's father William was a yeoman farmer who owned a small freehold or farm, Sandridge Barton. Sandridge was the manor of the Pomeroy family who had been lords of the estate since the days of Edward III. The manor was on the left bank of the River Dart which flowed to Darmouth located about 2 miles away.1

John and his brother Edward, who was a few years younger than he, grew up in the company of the Gilbert and Raleigh families who lived on a nearby estate named Greenway House. While of different social stations, it appears the boys were close friends through much of their lives. John and Humphrey Gilbert, well known navel heroes, were older than John and his brother, but their younger brother Adrian and their half brothers Carew and Walter Raleigh, were all within a few years of each other, and the boys seemed to have spent a lot of time sailing the Rivert Dart together. John remained close friends with both Adrian Gilbert and Sir Walter Raleigh throughout his life.1

Faith was related to the Gilbert family and all three families, the Davises, Gilberts and Fulfords were always intimate and related through blood as well as friendship.3

I (Kerry Davis) and others have often felt that there might well be a family relationship between John Davis and our own Captain James Davis who sailed first to American in 1607, a couple of years after John Davis' death in 1605. Unfortunately, so far, we have not been able to find a connection.5
