     Robert Hilton of Butterwick, Sedgefield was born before 1566 in Washington, County Durham, England. He was the son of William Hilton of Biddick and Margaret Metcalfe.

To my brother Sir William Hilton one angel; to his brother Ralph Hilton £20, and two suits of apparel the best I have, viz. two doublets, two pair of britches, and two pair of stockings, and my best gown; to every of my four sisters Elizabeth Thirkeld, Dorothy Constable, Eleanor Horsely and Margaret Vavasour, one ryall; to my cousin Margaret Blaxton, my best pair of virginals, which I bequeath to Anne Blaxton her daughter; to my cousin Else Eland, to Anne Eland her daughter, to Susan Baynbrige; to every servant 12d; to the poor £7, whereof £3 to Sedgefield, £2 to Washington where I was born, and £2 in Monkwearmouth parish; to Robert Rutter my man one doublet, and a pair of britches; the residue to my brother Ralph Hilton.¹

     Sibyl (Sybil) Lumley was born c 1481-1488. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas De Lumley and Elizabeth Plantagenet. Sibyl (Sybil) Lumley married William Hilton, son of William Hilton and Margery Bowes, on 25 May 1512.^3,4 Sibyl (Sybil) Lumley died between 1518 and 1581.
     

With Sybil Lumley's marriage into the Hilton family, this ancestral line's connection to the Plantagenets was made.

     William Hilton was born in 1471. He was the son of William Hilton and Margery Bowes. William Hilton married Sibyl (Sybil) Lumley, daughter of Sir Thomas De Lumley and Elizabeth Plantagenet, on 25 May 1512.^1,2 William Hilton died after 2 December 1526.¹
     William Hilton was also known as Sir William Hilton Knight.

In his will of (probably) 5 October 1518, Sir William conveyed his manors of Hilton, Ford, Usworth, Folanceby (Follonsby?), Grindon, Bermeton (Barmston?), Biddicke (Biddick?) Co. Durham; Carnaby and Wharram-Percy, co. Ebor; Aldstone, Kirkhaughe, Elryngton and Woodhall, Northumberland; to Sir William Bulmer, Sir Ralph Hedworth [his son-in-law, married to Anne], Robert Bowes of Cowton, George Bowes of Dalden, Robert Bowes of Aske, John Hedworth and John Lambton on trust for himself for life, with remainder intail male respectively to: Sir Thomas Hilton, his son and heir; William Hilton, his second son; Cuthbert, son of Thomas Hilton, late of Hedworth; Roger, son of George Hilton, late of Wylome, co. York; William Hilton, brother of Roger; John Hilton, Citizen and Merchant-Taylor of London; Adam Hilton of Parke in Lancashire; Thomas Hilton, Citizen and Skinner of London.

"Cuthbert Hilton is probably a descendant of William or Alexander." It's unclear in the listing of names above whether "Sir Thomas Hilton, his son and heir" is the same as "Thomas Hilton, late of Hedworth." Could Cuthbert be the grandson of William, son of Sir Thomas? A Cuthbert Hilton is mentioned in the will of Sir Thomas Hilton. Also, "one William Hilton was a Citizen and Merchant-Taylor, and actually Body-Taylor to Henry VIII as may appear by will dated 5 October 9 Henry VIII (1518)." I'm assuming this William is not our William of Biddick, William's second son and brother to Sir Thomas Hilton.³

     Margaret Metcalfe was born circa 1515 in Nappa, Yorkshire, England. She was the daughter of Sir James Metcalfe of Nappa Hall, Wensleydale and Margaret Pigott of Clotherham. Margaret married William Hilton of Biddick, son of William Hilton and Sibyl (Sybil) Lumley, say 1530.^1,2,3 Margaret Metcalfe died after 4 June 1566 in North Biddick, Durham, England.⁴ She was buried after 4 June 1566 at Holy Trinity Church, Durham, Washington County, England.⁴

Her three daughters Elizabeth, Dorothy and Helen; her son William and his wife Ann. Her executors to be Robert, Roger, Ralph, Sibill and Margaret Hilton. Supervisors her son William, her brother Sir Christopher Metcalfe, Mr. Robert Bowes, Mr. Thomas Layton, her brother Oswold Metcalf, and her sons-in-law Michael Constable and Marmaduke Thirkeld, and her nephew Anthony Thomlinson."^5,6
