According to the Utterback Family book, there was a report that Jacob and his two brothers hadn't come to America until 1770 where they landed in Norfolk, Virginia -- but this is refuted by various court records, also those of the U.S. War Department, and from Family Bibles. Here follows an excerpt from the book used as a refutation of the report:
"This INDENTURE made this first day of August Anno Domoni one thousand seven hundred and sixty-eight between the Right Honorable Thomas Lord Fairax. . . .and Jacob Utterback of the County of Fauquier and Colony of Virginia . . . .Witnesseth that . . . .for and in consideration of Yearly Rents and Covenants . . . .doth demise unto said Jacob Utterback one Missuage and ten parcells of land lying in the said County, being part of the tract or Parcell of land called and known by the name of the Manor of Leeds . . . .containing one hundred acres together with all orchards, meadows, etc. . . . .To Have and To Hold. . . .during the natural lives of Anna Elizabeth, his wife, and Martin Utterback, his son. . . .Paying the yearly rent of twenty shillings sterling at and upon the Nativity of our Blessed Lord and Saviour, etc."
"And thus," writes William Utterback in 1937, "this old technical legal document of Aug. 1, 1768 runs on into about 5 pages of tedious detail as now on file in Deed Book 3 for the Fauquier County Clerk's Office at Warrenton, VA."6
In regard to the memorandum written of Lord Fairfax's land deeded to the Utterback family, "The scribes for this record were Martin, the oldest son, and Benjamin, the youngest, of Jacob Utterback who were expert penmen as shown here by their ornamental flourishes. It is said that one of the old Life Insurance Companies engaged the services of Benjamin Utterback to do the fine script for the headings of their policies so expert was he in the use of the goosequill pen."7
Benjamin and Matie had 16 children but I list details only of their son Fielding who is in my direct line. Their other children were Polly, b. 1811; Lucy, b. 1812; William W., b. 1814; Martin, b. 1816; Joel, b. 1817; Cassander, b. 1819; Allen M., b. 1820; Charles, b. 1822; John, b. 1823; Susannah Jane, b. 1825 -- all born in Woodford County, Kentucky. The rest of the children were born in Boone County, Indiana: Eliza, b. 1827; Benjamin, Jr, b. 1828; Unnamed infant, b. 1830; David L., b. 1832; and Elizabeth, b. 1834.8
After their marriage, Benjamin and Matie moved their family from Woodford County Kentucky to Union Township, Johnson County, Indiana, where Benjamin entered land on September 8, 1828. The family later moved to Iowa about 1840, eight years before Benjamin died.9
Alfred H. Utterback, who in 1937 was living in Olympia, Washington, had in his possession the family records of his great grandfather, Jacob Utterback. Most likely these documents remain with Alfred's descendants. This includes a letter sent by Landon Utterback to his Uncle Ben and Aunt Matilda Utterback, who then lived in Boone County, Iowa, and was an announcement of the death of Benjamin's father, Jacob, of Woodford County, Kentucky, as having occurred April 27, 1842, "within a few months of his 100th year" (although if Jacob's birthdate is correct he would have actually been about three months shy of his 99th birthday).10

1788 - 1860
Matie Hanks was a second cousin of Nancy Hanks, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, and, therefore Abe's second cousin, once removed. She was the daughter of Abner Hanks (b. 1763 - d. 1846) and his first wife, Elizabeth Dale. Abner was a Revoluntionary soldier and his father, John Hanks, Jr. (b. 1728) was a brother of Nancy Hanks' grandfather, Joseph Hanks (b. 1725). Abner was in close affinity with the Jacob Utterback Family and moved from Woodford County, Kentucky with many of Jacob's children to Johnson County, Indiana, where he entered land in 1829 and where he married five times with an issue of 18 known children, five of whom married into the family of Jacob Utterback.
After Benjamin's death, Matilda married a second time to a Mr. Anteny in Washington State.4
The rather poor photo of Matie was in the possession of her grandson, Alfred H. Utterback, who in 1937 was living in Olympia, Washington. Most likely it remains in the possession of his descendants, along with the family records of his great grandfather, Jacob Utterback.5
Benjamin and Matie had 16 children but I list details only of their son Fielding who is in my direct line. It is said that one of the old Life Insurance Companies engaged the services of Benjamin Utterback to do the fine script for the headings of their policies so expert was he in the use of the goosequill pen."5
William Utterback states in his book, that "Jacob's Virginia home was at Chester's Gap, as described in the famous Fairfax Deed, and as told in the following memorandum of Jacob which is now [in 1937] in the possession of one of his immediate descendants, Alfred H. Utterback of Olympia, Washington:
"We started from Chester's Gap the 13th of October, 1797, and come to Redstone the 31st & went to Whelon (Wheeling) by land & got there the 4th of November & the boat came the 13th & the 15th we left Whelon & got to Limestone (now Maysville, KY) the 20th of November & we got to Woodford County (Ky.) at home the 3th day of December, 1979."
The family lived here and all 10 children were born in Chester's Gap before the family migrated "from Virginia to Kentucky" in 1797 as stated above.6
Alfred H. Utterback, who in 1937 was living in Olympia, Washington, had in his possession the family records of his great grandfather, Jacob Utterback.
