Birthplace of Herman Utterback
Herman Utterback was born circa 1663 in Trupbach near Siegen, Germany.1 He married Elizabeth "Elsbeth" Heimbach, daughter of Philip Heimbach and Maria Margaret Heimbach, on 11 August 1685 in Siegen, Westphalia, Germany.1 Herman Utterback died after 1748 in Germantown, Prince William County, Virginia.1

Before coming to America, Herman's birth name was Hermann Otterbach.1 Herman is considered to be the Founder of the Utterback family in America. He was the son of Johannes and Anna Otterbach of Siegerland, Germany, "as definitely determined by his marriage certificate."

Herman is on record as being a driver in the iron mines of Trupbach before coming to America. He was married in Germany, and all his children were born there. It has been determined in the Utterback book that while there are no definite records, the author's opinion is that Herman and his seven surviving children left Trupbach in the summer of 1713, and were in London with their fellow Colonists the following fall, sailing with his family that winter and landing in America April 1714. The official records show him as a member of the 1720 Germantown Settlement. Herman was about 51 years old at this time.2

Herman and Elizabeth had nine children, all born in Trupbach, Germany. They were, Margaret, b. about 1685; Elizabeth (Elsbeth), b. about 1687; John Philip, born 1692 (for more on his line see the Utterbach book); John (Johannes Otterbach), b. 1693, died young; John Jacob (Johan Jakob), b. 1695, died young; Alice Kathrina, b. 1697; Maria Kathrina, b. 1699; John, b. 1702 (whose line we follow here); and Anna Katharina, b. 1705.3
