10th great-grandfather of Kerry Suzanne Davis.
Alexander Carpenter was born circa 1546 in Wrighton, Somersetshire, England.1,2 He was the son of William Carpenter.1 Alexander Carpenter married Priscilla Dillon circa 1581 in Somersetshire, England. Marriage date is based on the birthdate of their daughter Julianna (circa 1581/83).2 Alexander Carpenter died circa 1612 in Wrighton, Somersetshire, England.2
The records show that Alexander and Priscilla with their five daughters moved to Leyden, Holland perhaps after the birth of their daughter Priscilla in 1597. They became members of the church at Leyden. There was the older son Nathaniel who being about 10 or 12 must have also moved to Leyden with the family although he is not mentioned.
In other undocumented family records I've found, I see mention of other children besides the five daughters who went to Leyden (Julianna, Alice, Agnes, Mary and Priscilla), four of whom died in Plymouth County, three of them marrying men who were important in the settlement of Plimouth. Since there are no sources to cite for these other children, I will list them here until they can be proved: Bridget b. 1587; Joan b. 2 August 1590; Ann b. 1 October 1592; and William born about 1600.3

To Mary Carpenter at Wrington in Somersetshire x x x x this letter to be left at the house of Joseph Leggatt near the sign of the rose in Ratcliffe Street in Bristol to be conveyed as addressed.'
This letter brought her to New England, where she died at Plymouth or Duxbury. The following note, in part, of a church record is quite illuminating:
Mary Carpenter, a member of the church at Duxbury, died at Plymouth, Mar. 19-20, 1687, being nearly entered into the 91st year of her age. She was a Godly old maid -- never married."1
