Son of Romanus de Helton.
13th great-grandfather of William Hilton.
24th great-grandfather of Kerry Suzanne Davis.
Alexander de Helton was born circa 1150 in Durham County, England.1 He was the son of Romanus de Helton. Alexander de Helton married Agnes Vessey circa 1175.2 Alexander de Helton died circa 1220 in Durham County, England.3
Alexander was also known as Sir Alexander de Hilton Baron of Hylton.
In 1771/74 Alexander de Helton was "expressly named Baron of the Bishopric in charters of Bishop Hugh. He was a witness to the charters of Bishop Hugh, with Germanus the Prior and John Archdeacon."4
In 1172, there was an Agreement made by Hugh of le Puiset, Bishop of Durham, between Germanus, Prior, and the Convent of St. Cuthbert and Alexander of Hylton, over the chapel of the will of Hylton, whereby Alexander or his heirs should present a chaplain chosen by them to the Prior; all tithe from their house should go to the chaplain, except 1 thrave of oats a year for each ox of their own ploughs to the mother-church; all tithe from 1 carrucate of Tubblard's land should go to the chapel, and all tithe, alms and customs from 4 bovates of Tubblard's land and from all the land of Risum to the mother-church; Alexander, his heirs and all the men of Hylton should come with their alms and oblations to the mother-church at four major festivals; the chaplain should make security to observe all these things; and the chapel should cease in the event of failure to observe them, until remedied. Tubblard's land consisted of four oxgangs, now in the tenure of Albert, Osbern, Outi, and Yvelot.
This charter is attested by Meldred son of Dolfin, William de Vesci, and William son of Uhtred, the founder of the Lumley line.
Alexander de Helton gave to the Church of St. Peter of Wearmouth for the sustenance of a Capellan to the altar of St. Laurence, 3 marks in silver.5
In 1180 he was a witness in the charter of Roger de Kebblisworth.4
According to information from Allan Hylton Scorer of the Hylton family taken from Surtees' History of Durham, Romanus de Helton was shown to be the first documented Helton and father of Alexander, and the starting point for this family line. I have made an Alternate Hilton Line linking this Alexander, son of Romanus, to the same Alexander previously thought to be the son of a Sir William Hylton, Knight, in the earlier data. The Alternate line starts in 900 with another Sir William de Hylton, Knight, and shows supposed, though not proven, ancestors of Alexander.4,6
