Sir Adam de Hylton was born between 925 and 975.1 He was the son of Sir William de Hylton (Knight) and Mademoiselle de Gresley.
Adam de Hylton lived during the reign of Athlestan, King of England (A.D. 895 to October 27, 939). Hylton gave the great cross or crucifix to the monastery Hartlepool in Durham. The cross was valued at 25 amers of silver (over three bushels) and he caused his arms to be engraved thereon as a perpetual memorial.

After the death of Athelstan's father, Edward the Elder, King of Wessex, in 924, Athelstan succeeded to both thrones, uniting the kingdoms of the south for the first time. In 927 he expelled the Norse rulers of Northumbria and obtained recognition of his supremacy from the kings of Cumberland and Scotland. Throughout rest of reign he extended his authority over most of England, by force or persuasion. His influence on the European continent, based on security at home and royal marriages of five of his sisters, was greater than that of any earlier English king.

The following message is handwritten on a manuscript sent to my great grandmother Ella Gregg Bean in about 1933 from David Manly Hilton regarding the source of the copy of the pedigree of the Hilton/Hylton family of England which he was sending to Ella.

PEDIGREE of the FAMILY of HILTON (HYLTON)
"This Family of Hilton is the most ancient family in England that bears a coat of arms," writes the author. And gives his source of information as "Mr. Gylls manuscript -- written in the time of Charles II." The above is from Hutchenson's History of Durham, England, Vol. 3 p. XVII (No. 2062__6, British Museum Library).

"The following Pedigree was compiled through the efforts of my Brother Hon. Orin N. Hilton, Denver, Colorado, who had some litigation in England at an expense of $50. and is authentic." Thus writes Mrs. Alice Hilton Coburn, 56 Silk Street, Lowell, Mass. It was sent to me too after copying. I returned the M.S. to Mr. Hilton of Denver.

Signed: David Manly Hilton of Damariscotta, Maine

This Hylton Family Pedigree was copied by hand by Ella Gregg Bean from David Manly Hilton's M.S., starting with a Sir William de Hylton, Knight, (ca. 900) down to Milo Walter Bean (b. 1878).

Please Note: After seeing Surtees' data, which starts the Hilton Family Line around 1146 with Romanus de Helton, it appears that there is no proven documentation to back up the people in this Alternate Line who all come before Romanus. This alternate line continues down to an Alexander Hilton (#1472) born c. 1210-1211, and then ends. His grandfather, Sir Alexander Hylton (#1467), of this same Alternate Line, b. circa 1150, is shown as the son of Sir William Hylton, Knight, Baron of Hylton. In the other Proven Line there is shown a Sir Alexander de Helton (#219), Baron of Hylton, born c. 1150, son of Romanus de Helton, who seems to be the same man. By switching to either Alexander de Helton or Romanus de Helton, one can follow the more accurate Hilton line down to the present day.1,2,3
