Eleanor of England/Leonora of Castile
Queen consort of Castile
Eleanor Plantagenet was born on 13 October 1162 in the Castle of Domfront, Normandy, and was baptised by Henry of Marcy. She was primarily known as Eleanor of England, and after her marriage to Alfonso VIII of Castile she was known as Leonora of England, Queen of Castile.1 She was the daughter of Henry II Plantagenet, King Of England, and Eleanor of Aquitaine Queen of England. Eleanor married Alfonso VIII King of Castile in September 1180 at Burgos, Spain. Eleanor was nearly eighteen years old at this time and Alfonso twenty-four; the marriage had been arranged to secure the Pyrennean border, and Gascony was offered as Eleanor's dowry.1 Eleanor died on 31 October 1214 at Las Huelgas Abbey, Burgos, Spain, at age 52.1

Eleanor's godfather, the chronicler Robert of Torigny, took a special interest in her and recorded her life as best he could. She was the namesake of her mother, Eleanor (or Alienor) of Acquitaine -- in the Occitan language, "Eleanor" meant "the other Aenor," and Aenor was the name of Eleanor of Acquitaine's mother.1

"Of all Eleanor of Aquitaine's daughters, her namesake Eleanor best inherited her mother's political influence. She reigned alongside her husband, who specified in his will that she was to rule alongside their son in the event of his death. It was she who persuaded him to marry their daughter Berenguela to the King of Leon in the interest of peace."1

When Alfonso died in October 1214, Leonora was reportedly so devastated with grief that she was unable to preside over the burial. Their daughter Berenguela instead performed these honors. Leonora then took sick and died only twenty-eight days after her husband.1

Llewelyn Fawr Ap Iowerth was born in 1173 in Dolwyddelan, Gwynedd, Wales. He was the son of Iorwerth Drwyndwn ap Owain Gwynedd and Marared/Margaret. Probably before 1196, Llewelyn and Tangwystyl Goch had a liaison producing children before Llewelyn married Joan Plantagenet. A liaison or marriage has been mentioned between him and Gwenllian Ap Iowerth which probably took place in Llywelyn's younger days. Llewelyn Fawr Ap Iowerth married Joan Plantagenet, daughter of John I Plantagenet, King of England and Agatha Ferrers, in 1205.1,2,3 Llewelyn Fawr Ap Iowerth died of natural causes on 11 April 1240 at Aberconwy, Gwynedd, Wales.1 He was buried at Aberconwy Abbey, Aberconwy, Gwynedd, Wales.

He was known as Llywelyn "The Great," Prince of Gwynedd (Northern Wales 1194-1240), Prince of Wales, and Ruler of All Wales (1203-1240). Llewelyn was the son of Iorwerth Drwyndwn ap Owain Gwynedd and considered to be the true heir of Iorwerth's father, Owain Gwynedd, the son of Gruffudd Ap Cynan of the House of Aberffraw (Geoffrey Plantagent, father of Henry II of England, is another descendant of the House of Aberffraw). In 1230, Llewelyn had William de Breos (father of his daughter-in-law Isabella) hanged "for excessive familiarity" with his wife Joanna. Llewelyn spent most of his life fighting off his father-in-law, King John, and trying to free Wales from English domination. He also spent a good deal of time fighting with the other Marcher Lords of Wales over territory. There are some wonderful historical novels about this period in Wales and the romance and lives of Llewelyn and Joanna, including King John of England, written by Sharon Kay Penman.2,3
