M.M. Kingman, circa 1900
Morrison McMillan Kingman was born on 26 June 1859 in Spirit Lake, Dickinson County, Iowa.2,3,4 He was the son of Rosalvo Kingman and Agnes Jane McMillan.1 Morrison McMillan Kingman married Sarah Ellen Utterback, daughter of William Edward Utterback and Caroline McPherson, on 19 November 1891 in Waterville, Washington.5,6,7 Morrison McMillan Kingman died on 19 March 1938 in Chelan, Chelan County, Washington, at age 78 years, 8 months and 21 days. Cause of death "thromboangistis obliterous," date of onset 1932.8,9

The following remembrances about his grandfather and father were shared by Wilkins Kenneth "Kenny" Kingman with Kerry Davis in 2000:

"M.M. Kingman and his brother-in-law, M.M. Pershall, were miners in the Horseshoe Basin area uplake. They married the Utterback sisters from Iowa. They did well for the times that they lived in because Granddad owned most of downtown Chelan at one time, also the Power Co. and had quite a bit of property, too. He gave each of the kids a parcel of land and homes but Dad and Uncle Keith were the only ones who built and stayed there. Dad and Keith were also involved in the mining in their early years."

Confirming citations below were gathered by Gretchen Louise Bradfield during her research on the Kingman Family:

"Morrison McMillan Kingman was known as MM Kingman. In a newspaper article in 1907, DeWitt C. Britt, editor of the "Chelan Leader," wrote: '"Kingman and A.M. Pershall, both of Chelan, were discoverers of the Horseshoe Basin Iodes below the summit of the Cascades in 1889." Later, Ford Van Voorhis wrote in his 1984 book, "The Homesteaders of Chelan Butte," that "MM Kingman and Al Pershall had been friends and partners since before 1891 when they discovered the Horseshoe Basin Iodes in the Upper Lake Chelan Basin." Gretchen Bradfield notes: "This also puts MM Kingman in Chelan Co. in 1891."

A further rather humerous note from Kenny Kingman commented on his search of the Census for 1900 in Chelan and finding "Grandfather, M.M., and many Wapato Indian babies with the Kingman last name! Either he was 'teepee creeping' or they honored him by using his name; hopefully the latter! He did go off mining or whatever for months at a time."10,11,12,13

In 1947, our family (Margaret, Kenneth, Kerry and Warren Davis) took a trip I, Kerry, have always remembered, where we drove up to Chelan, Washington to visit the Kingman family, my grandmother Alice Marie (Nana) Kingman's relatives (my father's grandparents and uncles). I (Kerry) remember it was a beautiful place, everyone was awfully nice, and I liked playing on the lawn with my "cousins" Ken and Karen (1st cousins, once removed to be accurate). Here are some photos taken by Dad.5

Keith attended University of Washington, and later was employed by electrical company, Chelan Washington.4
