DAVID BEAN KILLED
Horrible Accident on the Levee Yesterday Morning
One of those horrible and sudden accidents that almost freezes the blood in one's veins occurred at the boat landing at the foot of Cedar street yesterday at 10:30 a.m. David Bean of Denmark, formally a resident of this city and a guard at the penitentiary, but lately driving a freighting team for Arnold Fisher was at the levee for freight. After having the wagon heavily loaded the team became frightened at a launch and started to run throwing Mr. Bean forward and down under the wheels of the wagon which passed over his chest crushing him so fearfully that he died almost instantly.
Dr. Philpott was hurriedly summoned but when he arrived Mr. Bean was past all human aid. Mr. Bean was well and favorably known by nearly every one in the north end of the county and his sudden and untimely end will be greatly mourned by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and son, Milo, a clerk at the Santa Fe freight house and one daughter, Mrs. C.E. Cook of New London, Iowa.
There's another, much more detailed newspaper account in the Fort Madison paper which describes the accident in great detail. It also notes that David had been a guard at the Fort Madison Penitentiary several years before.
"The coroner's inquest over the body....revealed nothing in reference to the accident further than that related in the newspaper account and a verdict was rendered in accordance with those facts. The body was taken to the home of the wife, Mrs. Ella S. Bean, 526 Fourth Street, this city, and will be conveyed to Denmark today for interment.
Mr. Bean was born in Greenville, Pa., in 1846 and came to Lee county, Iowa, in 1870, locating at Wever. In 1872 he married Miss Ella S. Gregg of Washington township. He located in Denmark in 1884."1
