Captain Richard Warfield
b. 1639/40, d. between 1702/3 and 1704
8th great-grandfather of Kerry Suzanne Davis.
Captain Richard Warfield was born in 1639/40 in Berkshire, England. He married Elinor Browne, daughter of Captain John Browne, in 1670 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Captain Richard Warfield died between 1702/3 and 1704 His will, 1703-4, names children: John Warfield, Richard, Alexander, Benjamin, Mary, Rachel Yates, Elinor, prospective bride of Caleb Dorsey.1
"The family of Warfield has been one of consequence in England from the time of the Norman Conquest. Pagan de Warfield, a Norman gentleman, won a knight's fee and the estate of Warfield at the battle of Hastings, 1066, in consideration of his services to the king on that eventful occasion."
Captain Richard Warfield emigrated from Berkshire, England in 1662. He settled west of Crownsville, Anne Arundel County. In 1670, he married Elinor Browne, heiress of Capt. John Browne of London, England, a direct descendant of Sir Richard Browne, from whom she inherited "Hope" and "Increase." Capt. John Browne with his brother Peregrine Browne ran two of the best equipped transports between London and Annapolis.
"In 1673, John Browne, mariner, of London, bought two tracts "Hope" and "Increase" near Round Bay. These tracts, showing the history of their purchase, are to be seen in our Record Office, in the name of Richard Warfield and at his request were so recorded among the restored records after the burning of the State House. As no transfers attended the record, the inference is clear they came into Warfield's possession through his wife, Elinor Browne, the heiress of Captain John Browne of London."2
In 1689, then a captain, he signed as a military officer, the addess to King William. Rent rolls show that he held during his life "Warfield," "Warfield's Right," "Hope," "Increase," "Warfield's Plains," "Warfield's Forest," "Warfield's Addition," "Brandy" and "Warfield's Range."3,1,4
